CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Frieda Pahima was blessed with unusual and unique talents. Had she been born in other times and other places, most likely she would have been burned at the stake as a witch. But having been born in the city of Haifa in 1960, she succeeded in climbing the ladder of ranks in the Israel Police and eventually was appointed Head of the Investigations Department of the Northern Precinct.

Frieda’s renown for her brilliant intuitive flashes spread way beyond Haifa’s city limits. Investigating officers from all precincts, and from national headquarters as well, often came to consult with her and to challenge her “supernatural” skills in solving unresolved cases.

Frieda became especially skilled at finding missing persons. She was never able to explain − even to herself − what mysterious mechanism within her worked this magic. But the fact is that on more than one occasion, simply by looking at a photograph or an item of some kind, or just “out of the blue,” she was able to perceive and reconstruct, with amazing detail, the circumstances of the missing person’s disappearance, and sometimes even describe the precise location of his whereabouts, dead or alive.

Frieda was now sitting in her cold, dull office whose walls and ceiling were heavily stained from dampness. Her large wooden desk was covered with numerous photographs of the decapitated body that had been found in the Mt. Carmel Forest on Saturday morning. The photos were taken from various angles at the site itself and included pictures of the nude corpse taken at the Forensic Institute, where it was being held.

The police had placed repeated announcements of the murdered John Doe on the news broadcasts. The item was also given prominence in all languages in the printed media. No identifying documents or items were found on the corpse that could help solve the mystery; neither did the clothing disclose any helpful hints. They could have been purchased in Israel, or anywhere else in today’s “global village.”

The fact that nearly 48 hours had passed without any missing persons report coming in was also strange, for there is no one who doesn’t belong to a family or some sort of social circle, no matter how narrow and limited.

As one hand shifted idly through the photographs and the other supported her tired chin, Frieda Pahima tried to concentrate and find a lead of some kind towards solving the mystery.

In reality, no one was putting pressure on her. The police were far too busy running down security warnings and coping with ongoing criminal activities. A decapitated body whom no one inquires after is not of top priority − or, as they say, “Let dead bodies lie.” However, it is in the nature of meticulous investigators such as Frieda, as also with qualified CPAs, to find no rest as long as both sides of the balance sheet don’t balance out, as long as a corpse and its severed head remain unresolved.

Yesterday Frieda gave instructions to check out every hotel in the Northern Precinct and beyond.
